Namiki Yukari Milky Way Fountain Pen
A futuristic subject matter for an otherwise traditional methodology - Maki-e, one of the high decorative arts of Japan has been a marker for quality and luxury for centuries. Originally lacquered upon an ebonite body, Namiki now uses a brass base for its top tier pens. More importantly maki-e is about expressing emotion and meaning through beautiful pictures. The Milky Way, the galaxy including our solar system, was named for a Greek myth in which Zeus places the infant Heracles at the breast of Hera, whom upon waking is surprised and spills her milk upon the galaxy. Indeed, it has significance in many cultures, and in Japan it is known as the 'Silver River'. It was first recorded by its English name in Chaucer's poem:
"See yonder, lo, the Galaxyë Which men clepeth the Milky Wey, For hit is whyt: and somme, parfey" Chaucer, c. 1380
